The Ploughing Championships 2011
Ploughing Championships Opening Parade - 19th September
The return of the National Ploughing Championships to Athy will be marked by a colourful town parade of all participating counties on Monday evening, 19th September at 7pm.
The Churchtown Pipe Band will lead this year's parade, which will commence from the GAA grounds (on the Dublin Road) and proceed through the town along Leinster Street, Duke Street and turning off William Street onto Woodstock Street. The local organisers, Athy Town Promoters, welcome the whole community to come out and join in the festive athmosphere as the town welcomes thousands of visitors for the 80th anniversary of the championships.
The Athy Town Promoters Group is comprised of representatives of Athy Chamber, Shop Athy, Athy Tidy Towns, Athy Age Action, Athy Heritage Centre-Museum, Athy Town Council and the BRAND Project. The parade is being organised with the grateful assistance of the National Ploughing Association, Kildare County Show Committee, Athy Civil Defence, Athy Gardai, Narraghmore Vintage Club, Michael O'Brien and friends.
